The debate over the tech terminology "master" and "slave" is heating up now that LA has said no way.
Ridicule is being heaped on Joe Sandoval, division manager of purchasing and contract services of LA County. But vendors should pay attention.
From a PR perspective, this is a big deal. Other places will follow with regulations (it is PC do do so and politicians will jump on the bandwagon now that it is getting such play on CNN). Smart vendors will make public statements to the effect that they will cease using the terminology immediately. Then they will negotiate with their customers about retroactive changes.
It is insensitive, highly loaded nomenclature, and I am, frankly, surprised that resistance to it hasn't popped up before now.
Be prepared for further scrutiny into other potentially loaded terms. I can't think of any at the moment, but I bet they are out there.
